The Batsto River is a tributary of the Mullica River in the southern New Jersey Pine Barrens in the United States. Originating in Tabernacle Township, the Batsto River is joined by Skit Branch, Deep Run, Springer's Brook, Penn Swamp Branch and Goodwater Run before reaching Batsto Village where a dam forms Batsto Lake. From Batsto Village, the stream continues on for a few miles before its confluence with the Mullica River at The Forks. Much of the runable length of the Batsto River lies within walking distance of the Mullica River, which might lead one to assume that the two rivers look alike. Not so. The Batsto’s marshland is different from the Mullica’s. It has fewer exposed sandy banks, and it passes through an extensive cedar forest. The Batsto probably has more variety than any other river in the Pine Barrens. The best way to explore the river is by canoe camping (permit required).
