2015 Shad Season
Are there any Shad Anglers in our group?
There are no reports that the shad are on the move yet. The water is still too cold.
I may try eating one this year, instead of using them for fertilizer for my tomato plants or for crab bait, both that work very well
Factoids:
The shad spawning run occurs in the Delaware River around late March or early April depending on the water temperature and weather conditions.
Shad can be fished from shore or by boat, with the boat being the preferred method.
Most anglers use either Shad darts or a flutter spoons with a split shot.
A 6’ to 7’ medium action rod with spinning reel are most commonly used
3 Fish and no size limit
American Shad the “Poor Mans Salmon”
Adult shad weigh between 3 & 8 pounds.
Shad meat has a delicate and sweeter flavor when compared to Tilapia or Catfish.
Shad roe (eggs) are prized because they are considered a culinary delicacy.
The only negative are the 769 small bones.
