Registering Boats and Boat License

Do I need a anything special (beside a Pfd), to take a 10 ft Jon Boat with an Electric Trolling Motor in NJ / NY waters ?? I have gotten many different answers n just wana be sure before I get into some ISH ..

I was using an 8' row boat with an electric motor in the D&R canal and was checked out by a NJ Ranger. He cut me a break, but advised that I had to register the boat because I using an electric motor.

I have a 8 ft boat and I had to register it it coast $12 and then u just put the ID # on the side with the register sticker and number good luck and keep on fish

Anything motorized (gas or electric) requires registration. Anything with a gas motor requires a state boating license, which requires completion of the boating safety course. Courses are offered all around the state, info is on the internet.

Ok , so the boat has no title , but it has the remains of what used to be registration # next Question can i go to the dmv n register it without a title n get the registartion the same day or do i have to mail away for it ? Thanks for the help everyone .

How old is the boat? Everything manufactured after 1972 had a Hull Identification Number (HIN) stamped on it. If the boat is older than that, you have to contact the State boating agency and they will hook you up with one. But I'm guessing thats what number you are talking about in the previous post.

Forgot to add. If you go to the DMV with the HIN, but tell them you have no title, they will first review the HIN number and make sure the boat isn't stolen or there is any s*** going on with it. If everything checks out, then you can apply for a "Lost Title". If it isn't on the spot, the request will be mailed out to some state office and you should recieve something back in a few days. After you have the title, you will then be able to register it. Now, as you know, it won't be as easy as it sounds because the DMV is a terrible place, but good luck. If you have any more questions, I'll try to answer them.

i'm in that same boat. no title...what do i do. got a 12 footer for free.

Looking at the NJ MVC site, apparently boats 12ft or less do not need to be titled, but do need to be registered if they have a motor (electric or gas.)

Looks like Walter was wrong, its probably only moderately painful. But like any MVC transaction, plan on at least 2 visits.

Either way, I think yous guys will need some sort of notarized affidavit of transfer of ownership from whomever you got the boats from.
